Focus on Strengthening Political Party Leadership for a Developed Multi-Party System in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, July 14, 2025 (AFLEX) –A tripartite agreement has been signed between the African Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX), Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council, and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD) to facilitate their collaborative work.

During the signing ceremony, Zadig Abreha, President of the African Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX), stated that strengthening the capacity of political party leaders is vital for the development of a democratic system in Ethiopia, and the academy will focus on this area. He also revealed that AFLEX has prepared a political party training manual and a leadership development plan and strategy, both supported by indigenous knowledge.

Solomon Ayele, Chairperson of the Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council, emphasized the necessity of building the capacity of leaders and members based on knowledge to foster a democratic system in Ethiopia. He added that organizing training programs to empower political party leaders is crucial for this endeavor.

Solomon noted that the Council is actively collaborating with various stakeholders in this regard, stating that working with the African Leadership Excellence Academy (AFLEX) demonstrates their commitment to developing knowledge-driven leadership.

Dr. Yinibebe Nigatu, Ethiopia Representative for the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), highlighted that NIMD is providing technical and financial support for the establishment of a robust multi-party system in Ethiopia.

He stated that NIMD has been working with various stakeholders in the ongoing development of the multi-party democratic system and expressed satisfaction in signing an agreement today to work jointly with AFLEX.

AFLEX President Zadig Abreha reaffirmed his academy’s readiness to collaborate in building a strong multi-party system in Ethiopia.

Solomon Ayele, Chairperson of the Ethiopian Political Parties Joint Council, concluded by stating that the institutions involved will exert their full efforts to ensure the success of the signed agreement in establishing a developed and stable multi-party system in Ethiopia.
